Understanding You, Wherever You Are

I arrived in New Zealand with my family from South Africa in 2002 and settled in Cambridge, where I used my Horticulture diploma to start my own business doing garden landscaping and maintenance. I have two sons who completed school and went on to study at Waikato university. My oldest son obtained his Bachelor of Materials and Processing engineering degree and is now married and living in the Waikato. My youngest son obtained his Bachelor of Computer Science degree and now lives in Munich, Germany with his partner. We lived in Cambridge for 15 years until I chose to leave the North to relocate near Oxford, in the South Island. I re-established my Garden Landscape business until I felt it was time to find at a new direction in life.
I realised that my connection with my gardening clients created strong relationships in which they found a sense of security and trust and would confide in me, things that were too vulnerable to confide in the people close to them. This was the unconscious start of my journey into the counselling world, until I chose to give up working full time to study full time. Enrolling into Vision College in Christchurch to do my Counselling degree, to train as a person-centered counsellor was a turning point in my life in many ways. Not only did I see my own life in a new light, but have learnt how to assist others to work towards a new awareness and growth in their own lives. Arming themselves with tools to face future issues with a positive and motivated outlook.
Person-centered therapy is a humanistic approach to psychotherapy that was developed by psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940s.
He believed that people are inherently motivated to achieve positive psychological functioning and that everyone has the power to find the best solutions for themselves.
The therapist acts as a compassionate facilitator who listens without judgment and encourages the client to discover their own solutions.
The core conditions that the therapist needs to transmit to the client are empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard.
The client is believed to be the expert in their life and leads the general direction of therapy.
